SUPREME COURT. CRIMINAL SESSIONS.
TO-DAY'S PROCEEDINGS. The criminal sessions of the Supremo Court were resumed to-day, Mr. Justice Cooper presiding. "RIOTOUS LIVING." j James Reid, a fireman, was put forward for sentence for having stolen a watch and chain and some trifling articles from a labourer named Thomas Martin, on 4th November at the rear of the Clarendon Hotel. His Honour, in passing sentence, said it was a pity to see a man like prisoner, who had a wife and family in Scotland, wasting his substance in riotous living. Prisoner's discharges showed that he had previously borne a good character The jury had negatived all the serious matter connected with the offence. At the same time the crime of theft under ,the circumstances in question was not one I in respect of which probation was ordinarily allowed. If a berth could be ! obtained for prisoner on board a ship the court would be disposed to give him a chance. Mr. Myers, for the Crown, said that if prisoner were remanded until Monday the police would make enquiries into the matter. His Honour observed that if no berth could be obtained for him he would have to re-^ consider the matter. Then, again, if the ship was one which traded only in ! New Zealand waters he would make it ■ a condition of the terms of probation that prisoner abstained from liquor. j (Left sitting.)
