MR. J. E. FITZGERALD.
Mr. Fitzgerald got a splendid reception from the crowd. He thanked the electors of Wellington Suburbs for the confidence they nad reposed in him. As most of them were aware, fie entered the contest untrained and untried, and de•void of a knowledge of electioneering, but he ventured to say that night that he was an old campaigner. Ho did believe in one thing, and that was consistency. At the first ballot he ran second, and to be consistent he ran second that day. (Cheers and roaie of laughter.) But the electors could rest assured that in three years time he would be before them again; and that he would run first. (More cheers.) The contest and the support accorded nim would give him and other young New Zealanders an impetus which they required. Instead of one young New Zealand candidate there would be 21 at the next election. (Great cheering.) He thanked hi 6 opponents for the manner in which they had carried on the battle from the first, and his own committees, friends, and supporters, and called tor cheers for Mr. Luke.
