DEVELOPMENTS IN DUNEDIN. /Bt Telegeaph. — Sbxchjll to Thk Poot.J DUNEDIN, This Day. As the weather is fine a hervy pell ia anticipated in both North Duucdin and Chalmers to-day. Mr. Barclay has at last succeeded in getting a qualified Government hall-mark for his candidature, a letter being read from Mr. Millar last night, to the following effect : "Dear Mr. Barclay, — In Dunedin North election, as between yourself and Mr. Thomson, the Government desires to sec your return." This may influence a -m.mber of votes in favour of the late member, and may be the turning-point of the election. Mr. Thomson's (supporters, however, are sanguine. The Minister for Labom's presence at Mr. Allen's meeting at Poit Chalmers was certainly helpful to that gentleman's candidature. Naturally, he was called on to make_a speech, and thoKgh he proposed non-intervention in the election, the trend of his remarks supported Mr.' Allen's return. Tuapeka is expected to furnish & close finish, but I fancy Mr. Scott will get there. The women are more conspicuously active over the second ballot than they were last week. Friday being people <» Day for the Show, tradespeople in tho electorate resent the half-holiday to-day.
