UNREST IN CAROLINE GROUP. By Telegraph.— Press Association.— Copyright. (Received November 24, 9.43 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. There is much unrest among the natives of the island of Ponape, Caroline group, owing to the Germans levying a head tax. The natives threaten to wipe out all, the white people. Ponape, or Ascension, Island lies between the Philippines and the Marshall Islands, in the Pacific Ocean, and to the north of German New Guinea. News received early in September stated that intertribal fighting was taking place on the island, and that the white residents were alarmed and had asked for protection. Tho German authorities in New Britain despatched a punitive expedition of 100 police, who returned after a fight with the natives.
