WELLINGTON SUBURBS ELECTION. IT having been persistently rumoured that Mr. J. P. Luke, in his private business — 1 Employs an excessive amount of boy labour. 2. Overworks, and 3 111-treats his employees, and 4. Pays a low rate of wages, Mr. Luke' 6 late Committee thinks it advisable to point out : — 1. That the number of boys alllowed to bs employed is regulated by the Arbitration Court. Messrs. S. Luke and Co. have nev_r employed more boys than the aw;jrd allows, and HAVE SOMETIMES EMPLOYED LESS. 2. Messrs. Luke and Co. have several employees whose length of service ranges from 25 to 30 years. These men aro thoroughly competent workmen, and could easily obtain employment from some other firm if they desired. Why then do they stay with Mr. Luke? IS IT BECAUSE HE OVERWORKS THEM? 3. Tho Committee could, if space permitted, quote several instances of Messrs. Luke's generosity towards their employees, but for the present purpose, it will sufTica to reprint an extract from the speech of one of New Zealand's greatest sports, Mr. W. J. Wallace, as reported by the Evening Post to-night. Mr. Wallace says — "I wish to acknowledge publicly the generosity of my employers, Messrs. S. Luke and Co. to whom I am greatly indobled. Altogether, in permitting mo to go on tour, they have conceded about 2£ years of my lime, and I need not nay how greatly that has conduced to such success as I have achieved." 1 The Arbitration Court has. fixed the wages to be paid by engineering 1 firms. Whilst Messrs. Luko and Co. aro prevented by law from paying less than the amount stated in the award, they are not prevented, and in many cases, do PAY MORE THAN THE AMOUNT FIXED. At several of Mr. J. P. Luke's meetings, including that at St. Thomas's School to-night, the que^tjon has been asked whether in this election Mr. Luke was being run by Messrs. Divan Bros., Hotel Brokers, etu. _Mr. Luke's answer i;i every cuso was plainly given and was a« follow s: — "I am not being aided in any way by Messrs. Divan Bros., nor by any other person or party. I am absolutely 'on my own.' " Mr. Luke's late Committee regrets that it has been found necessary to insert the above advertisemuni,. By order of the committee. W. BRANIGAN, Chairman of lato Committee J9th Novembei, 1908. HUTT Valley Horticultural Society's Rose Show, Hult Town Hall, Tomorrow (Tuesday), at 3 p.m.
