The Labour Depaitment has informed Mr. Grenfell, secretary of the Employers' Association, that it will bo quite sufficient compliance with the Shops and Offices Act if the business places in Wellington Central close on Tuesday afternoon instead of on Wednesday, as they are requested to do by the Mayor's advertisement appearing in this issue. The exhaustive directory expands yegt by year until one needs almost to* have a portable crane to handle it — and then the time has arrived for the sectional directory. A good example of this kind of work is Turner's Directory of Manufacturers of Australia for 1888, which is compiled in conjunction with tho Chambers of Manufacture in the respective States, particulars of which were advertised on Saturday. It is printed in legible type, strongly bound in blue cloth, and is liberally supported by advertisers. It covers the whole area of the Commonwealth, is strictly confined to manufacturing firms, and seems to be very complete. The names appear under the respective trades, which are sot out in alphabetical order, the States as subordinate headings. A few pages of introductory matter give statistics showing the progress pi manufacture in Australia. The proprietor is now in Wellington, is preparing for the second annual issue, which is to include New Zealand ; and wo understand that the cooperation of tho Industrial Association has been promised.
