"AN OUTRAGEOUS SLANDER." TO THE EDITOR.
Sir, — A gentleman whom I had previ« ously credited with some regard for decency and fair play, writes this morning in a newspaper about which 1 had long since ceased to make any such mistake, a letter plainly implying that, under tha cover of anonymity, I have been promoting in your columns my candidature foe Wellington East. It is impossible for me to deal adequately in perspn with ail outrageous slander carefully reserved by, my chivalrous assailant for the very Wft day of a long campaign^ but 1 may do so after the fight 'is over, if I can bring myself to stoop so low. In the meantime, I will ask you to say whether I have written, inspired, suggested, hinted at, or supplied the material for any, article or paragraph in the Evening Post, favouring mjy own candidature, or disparaging or criticising the claims of my; opponents, except what bears my own name as the writer or speaker? — I am* A. R. ATKINSON. [This mafefcer is referred to in our Edi* torial 'colranas.]
