SWIMMING.
A stiff northerly wind prevailed on> Saturday, when the swimming season was opened at the Thorndon Baths by Mr. T. Ronayne, president of the Wellington Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association. He made some pertinent remarks as to the laudable work of life-saving, and expressed the hope that it would be earnestly taken up j by swimmers here. Two races were held during the afternoon, considerable interest being centred on the. 50 yards ■handicap, by reason of Fred Roberts being matched against R. Healy, late of Sydney. In one heat ~ both men starting from scratch — Roberts won by a touch in 29 2-ssec. In the final heat both men were unplaced, being a dead heat about five yards behind Brice, who showed much improvement in form. Following are the particulars of tha races :—: — 50yds Bov,s' Handicap. — C. H. Capper (scr) 1, A. J. Foster (4sec) 2, B. Hurley (7sec) 3. Also started — J. Henrys (12sec), L. Henrys (llsec), B. West (osec). Timo, 33 3-osec. 50yds Handicap. — First heat — C. Brice (7sec) 1, J. Stratford (Bsec) 2, C. Bruce (Bsec) 3. Also started :C. Aston (9sec), L. Salek (6sec), J. Hopkirk (6sec), D. M'Leod (ssec). Time, 33 2-ssec. Second heat — Fred Roberts (scr) 1, R Healy (scr) 2, E. S. Forne (ssec) 3. Also started : C. Moore (4sec), R. Nelson (7sec). Time, 29 2-ssec. Final— C Brice, 1; J. Stratford, 2; C. Bruce, 3 Time, 32 2-ssec. The officials for the gathering were Judges, Messrs T. Ronayne, F. Wilton, A. St. Clair; timekeepers, Messrs. a! W. Smith, A. A. Somerville, and L. W. Ludwig ; starter, Mr. E. J. Fleming ; check starter, Mr. G. S. Hill; marksman, Messrs. D. Joslin and Dyson.
