DAMAGE BY FIRE.

The Empire Hotel, which was de- • stroyed by fire early this morning, was | insured for £750 and tho furniture for £500 in the Atlas Company. ' The office of Mr. J. H. Wilson, Union Steam Ship Company agent, adjoining, also gutted, was insured, with contents, for £215 in j the South British. The Bank of New Zealand, opposite the Empire, was bad- , ly scorched, and the windows wore broken. The Town Hall was slightly scorched. The water supply now being brought in was utilised with splendid j advantage, and certainly saved a more disastrous conflagration, as for some time the Cafe de Paris Hotel and other neighbouring places stood in jeopardy till the water was got on. TIMARU, 21st November. A seven-roomed house and out-build-ings at Temuka, the property of Mr. M. Scannell, were completely destroyed by fire this morning. The house had been unoccupied for some time.
