MR. LUKE AT NORTHLAND.
Mr. J. P. Luke spoke at Northland last night in further support of his candidature for Wellington Suburbs. There wera about fifty electors present, including several women. Mr. J. Aston presided. The candidate's speech was on the lines of his previous utterances. He said he had always kept clear of personalities, and he would continu* t» do 60. Mr. Fitzgerald, however, said that ke (Mr. Luke) had given it out that lift had the Government support. Ho had never eaid co, and was mot concerned whether he had the Government support or not. He was content to rest on hix views and on his public career. The present condition of affairs called for the closest investigation and for the most honest administration. He advocated a still more energetic land settlement policy, and the removal of any disabilities that might exist. As to the'industrial question, he said he had never been an. advocate of piecework or of the exertion wage. He also declared that his firm paid their men full wages, believing that they got a better result from a highly paid man than from a "scallywag." He advocated an extension of the system of advances to workors, and greater care of those physically unfit. In regard to the Local Option poll he congratulated the Suburbs on declaring for No-license, but lie was one who believed in tko three-fifths majority, as he did not desir» a frequent oscillation of ths public mind on the subject. A good many of his temperance friends urged that tha reduction element should bo eliminated. He had always thought that himself, and he declared most emphatically thai he' would never do anything to retard temperance legislation. Ho would always further any object designed to bring about temperance reform. (Applause.) He was not pledged to support the Government <m any and every occasion, and would not support measures which he did not agree with. At the conclusion of his address Mr. Luke was accorded a vote of thanks and confidence.
