Router's correspondent at Lucknow, capital of Oudh, reports that the Viceroy, Lord Minto, who has Been making a tour through the province, addressed a great gathering of talukdars, thanking them for the unswerving devotion they had shown to the Crown. His Excellency declared that he did not share the opinion that the time was inopportune for the introduction of broader political principles. He did not believe the fanatical deeds of a few persons had blackened the reputation of the whole of the people of India. Nevertheless, Lord Minto continued, he recognised that the Government was face to face with an anarchical conspiracy that was a menace to personal safety and public security. Tho Administration would not hesitate to forge special weapons to eradicate an evil ! which was undermining the welfare of the country. A taluk constitutes a revenue district or dependency, the native proprietor of which is responsible for the collection and payment of the public revenue due from it. At one time the talukdars, whose estates' are very large, ground down the tillers- of the soil, but a better state of things came into existence when the country was annexed by Britain The Viceroy nas interrupted his tour in order to proceed to Calcutta, where he will discuss the general situation ■witn the Administrative Council.
