The Peninsular and Oriental Company has declared a dividend ot 6£ per cent, on deferred shares, and a bonus of 3 per cent. BANKRUPT RENT TO GAOL. SYDNEY, 20th November. .4s a sequel to the Freeman and Wallace case, reference to which was cabled on 16th September, Henry Rosenburg, otherwise Howard Freeman, has been sent to gaol for seven days by the Act-ing-Registrar for prevarication and evasion in connection with his bankruptcy examination. ~y fßobert Grimshaw brought an action against Howard Freeman and Richard Wallace, M.D., for compensation for neglect and unskilful treatment, and obtained a verdict for £450 damages, the presiding judge (Judge Cohen) making very strong remarks regarding the conduct of the Freeman and Wallace institution. An effort was made to stay proceedings, and then Freeman sought the protection of the Bankruptcy Court.] STATE-OWNED ATLANTIC CABLE. OTTAWA, 20th* November. Great satisi action is expressed here at the published statement that Mr. R. Lemieux, Postmaster-General, is negotiating with the Imperial Government with reference to a State-owned Atlantic cable, and that Australia and New Zealand may co-dperate. Canadians believe that such a cable will immediately cut the rates between Britain and Australia dpwn to one-half, and eventually to a much lower rate. PERSIA. LONDON, 20th November. • The latest advices from Teheran report that the Shah has refused to rehabilitate the Constitution and convene the Mejliss immediately, according to his promise. In adopting this attitude, Ali Mirza relies upon the support of the clergy, and on artificial demonstrations that have been got up in opposition to the constitutional movement. A MAN LOSES HIS LIFE, v ROCKHAMPTON, 20th November. The Grand Hotel at Emu Park, 29 miles east of this town, was burned down last night. The occupants barely escaped in their night-clothes, and RusseL' Brown, a school inspector, was so badly bnrned that he succumbed to-day. PURCHASE OF RAILWAYS AND DOCKS. LONDON, 20th November. The Taff Vale Railway arranged for the purchase of the Rhymney and Cardiff Railways • and the Bute Docks, at Cardiff. The purchase represents a twenty million deal. The combined undertaking will direct a shipping trade of seventeen million tons, including the Penarth trade. A BIG ESTATE. LONDON, 20fch November. The estate of the late Sir Blundoll Maple, M.P., head of the firm of Maple and Co., upholsterers, and a wellknown racehorse owner, has been revalued at £2,153,292. CATTLE DISEASE. NEW YORK, 20th November. Stockyards at East Buffalo have been closed pending an investigation into an outbreak of foot and mouth disease. The States of Pennsylvania and New York have been quarantined. HOP SUBSTITUTES IN BEER. LONDON, 20lh November. Mr. Asquith has announced that at an early date a Bill to prohibit hop substitutes in beer would bo introduced in tho House of Commons." LONDON ELECTRICITY . BILL. LONDON, 20th Novembpr. The Standing Committee of the House of Commons unanimously rejected tho London District Electricity Supply Bill, and will now consider Bills having for their object the existing supplies. [The Bill was promoted with the object of obtaining powers to supply "bulk" eleotricity over the county of London, and a considerable area outside.] JAPAN AND KOREA. LONDON, 20th November. Japan's guaranteed issue of a two million loan by the Industrial Bank of Japan to develop Korea was largely oversubscribed in London.
