SENATE MAKES ITS CHOICE. YASS-CANBERRA SELECTED. By Telegraph.—Frew Association.—Copyright. MELBOURNE, 6th November. When the ballot for a capital site was proceeded with in the Senate this afternoon there was considerable excitement, and the Senate galleries were filled. The final choice resulted in favour of Yass-Canberra. At the first ballot there was a tie: — Yass-Canberra ... ... ... 18 Tumut 18 This was the outcome of some secret engineering. The supporters of the Dalgety site, knowing that a certain Victorian member intended to vote for Tumut, with tho idea of afterwards transferring his vole to Yass-Canberra, combined to vote for Tumut so as to produce a tie. When the tie was announced the Dalgety men claimed that the whole question was ended, but the Vice-Pre-sident of the Council, Hon. R. W. Best, insisted that each of the six sites nominated must be balloted for. This course was followed, and the final ballot resulted: — Yass-Canberra 19 Tumut 17 Elovon sites were nominated, namely, Dalgety, Canberra, Lyndhurst, Albury, Yass, Armidnle, Tooma, Tumut, Laka George, Bombala, and Orange. The House of Representatives, on the Bth October, chose Yass-Canberra. It was evident, after the first ballot had beea taken, that the only two really in tho running were Dalgety and Yass. Up to the sixth ballot Dalgety wai* leading; at the seventh the voting was eqtial, an& the ninth and final resulted: —Yass, 39; i Dalgety, 33. The Yass-Canberra area embraces a triangle loughly bounded by Yass, Canberra, and Lake George. It is well watered and fertile.
