Sir Harry Rawson, Governor of New South Wales, has been placed on the retired list of admirals.Sir Harry Rawson has proved one of New South Wales's most popular Governors. At the conclusion of his term of office, in deference to v, strongly-ex-pressed public wish, he consented to act as Governor for another twelve months. Sir Harry was born at Walton-on-Hill, Lancashire, on sth November, 1843, and educated at Marlborough. He became a naval cadet in 1857, sublieutenant in 1863, lieutenant in 1863, commander in 1871, captain in 1877, rear-admiral in 1892, vice-admiral in 1898, and admiral in 1903. He wsrved in the China war in 1858-61 (wounded and several times mentioned in despatches), find for three months commanded 1300 Chinese troops for the defence of Ningpo again&t the rebels. In 1895 he commanded ' the expedition against M'barack) and captured Mwele, commanded at the bombardment of the Sultan's palace, Zauzibar (in 1896) and of Benin (1897). Sir Harry also served in Cyprus and Egypt. In turn he was commander-in-chief on the Cape of Good Hope and West African station, and of the Channel squadron.

Councillor J. Smith has again been elected by the City Council as its representative on the Wellington Benevolent Institution Board of Trustees. '
