NEW RAILWAY RATES.

IMPORTANT CONCESSIONS. FARES IN THE EXTENDED SUBURBAN AREA. A new scale of passenger fares on the New Zealand Railways is gazetted, and will come into force on the 9th instant. Fifty trip single tickets, not transferable, will be issued for diptahces from two miles to twenty-five miles (instead of twenty as at present), at rates varying from 7s 6d first, and 5s second for two miles, to £2 10s first-class, and £1 18s second-class, for 25 miles. Fifty trip family tickets will also be issued for distances up to 25 miles, and will be available for three months. The rates vary from 10s first-class, and 7s 6d second-class, to £3 first-class, and £2 10s second-class. Workers' twelve trip tickets, available for a fortnight, ate to be issued at a minimum of Is 6d for two miles, and an increase of 6d for every other mile additional. The new scale of suburban fares in ordinary is as follows :—: —

Previously a person, living at Te Avo could not get a commutation or workers' ticket from Te Aro to Upper JETutt as the distance is 21 miles, but now, under the concessions set forth in the Gazette, •they will be able to do so. The alteration of the suburban area for ordinary tickets to 20 miles Is also a big concession. Previously suburban fares were quoted from certain specified stations only; now any station within the area comes under the concession. In. addition, special concessions are made in the fares from Te Aro or Wellington to Upper Hu'.t and intermediate stations afnd vice versa, in so far as stations beyond Lower Hutt to Upper Hutt are concerned. The effect of the alteration of the suburban area will also be to reduce the fares to and from stations, beyond the suburban area and to and from stations within the suburban area, as the Department will charge the combination rate, viz., ordinary suburban where cheaper. For example, the fares from Wellington to Masterton now are : 16s Ist return, 10s 6d 2nd return. Under the new conditions they will be as follow :—l4s: — 14s lid Ist return, and 9s lOd 2nd return, computed as follows: — Ist 2nd Return Return .Wellington to Upper Hutt (suburban) ... 3s 3d 2s Od Upper Hutt to Masterton (ordinary) ... Us 8d 7s lOd 14s lid 9s lOd and co on from other stations. Road metal for use by local bodies will be charged at three-eighths the classified rates for class 2, the minimum charge being Is 6d per ton. Tar for Jocal bodies will be charged class N, the minimum being 2s 6d per ton.

"There is no fear of any coalition in the House of Representatives, and that fact, should be understood," said Mr. H. G. Ell at Christchurch last evening. "The Opposition, on account of its extreme weakness, is trying to bring about a coalition, but if anything of that kind took place, it would drive a number of men holding the views I hold straight into opposition. We must do all that we possibly can to guard against the possibility of any coalition taking place, and to strengthen the Libsral-Labour party in the House by the election of good progressive supporters."-
