CITY COUNCIL.

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. .VARIOUS REPORTS. The City Council met at 4.30 p.m. yesterday in order that members who wished to join the party travelling to the Main Trunk railway ceremony might be able to get away in time. There were present — The Mayor (the Hon. T. W. Hislop), Councillors Luke, Smith, Cohen, BalKnger, Hales, Shirtcliffe, Biss, M'Laren, Morrah, Murdoch, Carmichael, Fletcher, Fisher, and Hindmarsh. ABATTOIRS COMMITTEE. The Abattoirs Committee recommended that tenders be called for the lease of portion of the abattoirs site at Ngahauranga, the term of tho lease to be seven years. — Adopted. BATHS AND CITY RESERVES. The committee recommended : That the Wellington Civil Service Amateur Sports Club be granted permission to hold an evening sports meeting on the Basin Reserve on the 25bh November, on certain conditions. That an order for twenty-four garden seats be placed with Mr. A. Lawton, at a cost of 20s each. That the old fence at the north end of Newtown Park be replaced with a picket fence. That it is desirable that the unoccupied portion of the Karori cemetery reserve be let fur grazing purposes. That the V.M.C.A. Amateur Athletic Club be granted the use of a room at the Basin Reserve on the usual conditions. That fresh tenders be called for the lease of portion of Town Belt, part section "A," Oriental Bay. That authority be given to, the committee to complete the lease of the piece of Town Belt adjoining Constablestreet, already applied for, and granted to the Newtown Lawn Tennis Club. — Adopted. BYLAWS AND STREET LIGHTING. The committee recommended : That, two electric lamps be erected at Jack-son-atreet, Island Bay, and that all future extensions be carried out with elctricity. That the Electrical Engineer's report regarding the application o£ the Eoseneath Ratepayers' Association for lamps at Oriental Bay from the tramway terminus to Ballena Bay be adopted. That the application of Mr. G. A. Hurley for the consent of tho council to a right-of-way at Courtenayplace be granted, subject to the conditions laid down by the City Engineer. That the application of Mr. G. London for the consent of the council to a right-of-way, Ghuznee-street, be granted subject to the conditions imposed by the City Engineer. That the owner of property in Grant-road encroaching on the street be called upon to remove the encroachment forthwith. That a piece of land at Upland-road be transferred to the Upland Estate Company in exchange for a piece of land dedicated for road purposes. That Mr. H. Brown be allowed to extend the side fences of his property at Kelburne-parado (to enclose/ about one-third of the Road Reserve, which is unformed), provided he removes the fences when required, and erects a permanent fenco along the true boundary line of his section. That notices be served on owners of property encroaching on Kelburne-parade and South-terrace to have their fences removed to tho proper boundary. That the application of Messrs. Seaton and Sladden for permission to extend Bur-»iell-avenue be granted, provided the street is set off 66ft, and formed to the full width, 66ft.— Adopted. FINANCE. The committee recommended : That the Sailors' Rest • bo granted a subsidy of £5. That the Northland 'Municipal Electors' Association be informed that the Engineer has advised that no more money ought to be spent on Anderson Park until the present filling subsides. That the applicant for a refund of his deposit lodged in connection with a contract, and which he refused to complete, be informed that his deposit cannot be refunded. That a refund of the solicitor's fee of £1 Is be made to the defendant in the case of Corporation j v. Kelly, re defective water fittings. Some discussion took place on the question of tho refunding of the deposit on contract. It was moved by Councillor Carmichael, as an amendment, and seconded by Councillor Murdoch, "That the deposit be refunded," but the report was adopted on the voices, the majority of members holding that the council should adhere to the conditions laid down in the contract in the interest of all parties. POWER AND TRAMWAYS. The committee recommended : That an increase of 6d per day be granted to three assistant engineers and three fitters at the lighting station. The committee reported that it had authorised a subcommittee to arrange with the Crawford Estate for the purchase of land in Onepu-street, and that it had authorised tenders to be called for fittings for turbo-generator and wire for lighting extensions. — Adopted.*
