MR, FISHER AT HERBERTSTREET.

Mr. F. M. B. Fisher addressed a crowded meeting of electors at the Her-bert-street Mission Hall last night. Mr.

J. Smith presided. The candidate dealt with various import-ant miestions of the day. Me criticised the Government administration of finance and pointed out that only 66 per cent, of the national d<»bt in Xcw Zealand was expended on ■works repaying interest on the- loans as compared -with 93 per cent, of the Victorian National debt. A quarter of a million was spent annually on defence in th» Dominion, and yet the. InspectorGeneral reported that on his inspection tour of both islands he had been able to see- only 40 per cent, of the volunteers of tha Dominion. Mr. Fisher advocated the appointment of a day in every year aa a national shooting day, and every man should be provided with a i iik. He »pok» ;n; n f<ivour also of a protective tauff, and in defending the usefulness of Independent members said that nearly every member of the present ministry had be-gun his political career as an Independent. Mr. Fisher answered a number of questions involving passages with members of the Socialist party, and on the motion of Mr. Richards, who referred to the candidate as on© of tho most fearless critics in the House, was accorded a hearty vote of thanks and confidence.
