LABOUR MATTERS.
i — [by telegraph. — wiess association:] CHSISTCHURCH, 2nd November. At a meeting of tho Canterbury Trades and Labour Council on Saturday the Dunedin Bootmakers' Union wrote stating that thoy could not support the motion. suggesting the removal of Mr. Justice Sim from the Arbitration Court bench. Tho combined unions of Broken Hill wrote urging upon the council to communicate with all unions and acquaint them of the state of the labour conditions in Broken Hill. It was decided to, accede ti> tha request, and the executive were instructed to watch tho development of tho coming; conference with the employers at Broken Hill. The following resolution was ordered to bo forwarded to the Minister ot Railways: — "That the Minister of Railways bo communicated with pointing, out that the men did not go out on striko on account of dissatisfaction with the conditions, but owing to the 10 per cent, reduction of wages, and all we desire is that those men should 'be, allowed .to buy back their time similar to the maritime strike men, and further, we desire to ascertain on what terms tho time of thc>se could be purchased " At a special general meeting of the Canterbury Freezers' Union, held at the Trades Hall on Saturday evening 1 , there was a long discussion on a remit from the Canterbury Trades and Labour Council, in which members were urged to patronisa local industry by purchasing none but loeally-mado hats. It was decided that no action should be takon in tho matter, the unanimous opinion of members being that the propor course was the establishment of a State-owned hat factory. On Saturday afternoon, at the Trades Hall, a new union, the Canterbury Dress and Costume Makers' Industrial Union of Workers, was formed. Thero was a large and enthusiastic meeting of those intorestecl. Tho now union is being assisted in its initial stages by the committee of the Canterbury Federation of Unionß.
