HUTT GASWORKS.
TO TSK EDITOB. Sir,— "A circular has been sent round by the proposers of the gasworks, embodying statements which call for consideration. If the statement is true, that gas can be manufactured at the Plutt at a profit, and delivered, at the price of 4s 63d per thousand feet, according to the alleged evidence of the engineer of the city gasworks, what an enormous profit the City Gas Company must be making, on their present prices. There is also a statement in the cirqular, that the loan will not mean an increase in the rates, as the cost will be paid by consumers. Now that is just the crux of the position. It is the nonconsumers, the section owners, who will have to guarantee any loss made, and they have great doubts, but that the consumer will get the benefit of the low prices, and that the section holder will have to eventually stand the racket. The" 1 statement that a "reduction in price of gas to consumers will be assured," must be looked at in this light. For some reason the Hutt rates are extraordinarily high, and without allowing oneself to be biased, by mere jealousy of Petone, it is evident that Tf the cost of carriage of coal is any consideration, gas must be manufactured cheaper at Petone than at the Lower Hutt. For this reason, I hope the gas proposals "ill be thrown out at the poll to-morrow. — I am, etc., C. W. TANNER.
