LOCAL AND GENERAL At the Stock Exchange call to-day, sales were made of both descriptions of Wellington Gas shares; £16 »vas' paid for the £10 shares, whilst the second issue realised £11. A good many of these shares have changed hands recently, and the demand is etill unsatisfied. ■Grand Junctions soid at £1 16s 6d, an advance on late quotations, whilst Tangiaro scrip at 9d was again the medium of business. Talisman and Waihi quotations were virtually unchanged. A telegram from the Tangiaro management nae been received, and reads as follows : — "Brernner Reef cut in low level, six inches wide, splendid looking stone, showing no gold; diiving seawards -on it; also commenced driving on Golden Shore reef. Country in both places all that could be desired." A special meeting of the WellingtonManawatu Railway Company was held to-day to confirm the following iesolution passed on 12th October :—" That the sale of the company's railway and the land and other property described in the schedule to 'The Wellington and Manawatu Railway Purchase Act, 1908,' upon the terms and conditions expressed in the said Act, be and the same is hereby approved, ratified, and confirmed." Mr. J. Kirkcaldie, chairman of directors, presided. About thirty shareholders were present. The resolution was confirmed unanimously. ' The Prime Minister, who returned to Wellington yesterday, states that certa n candidates, for party reasons, still continue to predict trouble and disaster, when there is absolutely nothing to warrant their gloomy anticipations. He maintains that the state of the Dominion's public finance was never better than it is to-day. A valuable site in Buckle-street, at present occupied by rent-producing buildings, is destined for the erection of the now Catholic Cathedral of Wellington., For tihe past eight years money has been collected in various ways for a building fund. As much ab £230 was realised in the Thorndo-i parish by a recent canvass by the Rev. Father Holly, of Blenheim. It is expected that over £200 will result from similar work in the Te Aro pariah. A little over £15,000 has already been received for the cathedral. Before commencing work about £20,000 in all is needed, and this amount it is estimated will be in hand in about eighteen months' time. The repairs to the Wanganui-Waka- ( puakiv ca,ble were completed on Saturday.
