The Victoria Racing Club's spring meeting promises to be one of the most successful in the club's history. Never before has there been a bigger Derby day. Notwithstanding the provisions of the (Gambling Act, the attendance of the public in the cheaper parts was greater than ever, while J,he reserves and stands were all crowded. The thousands of ladies in spring costumes who thronged the course found everything perfect. The 'night's rain had freshened the turf, and the lawns, set off by festoons of roses, never looked better. The Governor-General (Lord Dudley) and Lady Dudley attended their first, Cup carnival, accompanied by the Governor of Victoria (Sir Thomas G. Carmichuel),, and visiting Governors, also Rear-Admiral Sir Richard Poore, Coni-manderin-Chief of the 'Australian squadron. Lord Dudley expressed delight with the surroundings and the arrangements. The following are details :—: — Maiden Plate, one mile. — Bobadil, 7.13, 1; Five Crown, 7.13, 2; Beau Vive, 7.10, 3. Time, lmin 41isec. Maribyrnong Plate, a sweepstake of 25 soys each, with 1500 soys added ; for two-year-olds. Five furlongs. Messrs. H. and P. Osborne's b c Brookong, by Orzil (imp.) — Kettledrum, 8.10 1 Mr. H. A. Curries Mala, 8.10 ... 2 Mr. J. L. Curries Captain White, 8.10 t Mr. E. Manifold's Saltare, 8.10 ... t t Dead heat. Also started — Zilka. Boniface, Barm, Apple Pie, and Beebern. Won by threequarters of a" length, a head between the second and third horses. Time, lmin 2-jjsec. Hotham Handicap, one mile and a half.— Moani, 7.2, 1; Lady Diffidence, 7.1, 2; Le Jeune, 7.7, 3. Also started— Woorooma, Sergeant Brue, and Orline. Le Jeune was left at the post Moani won by five lengths, with two and a half lengths between the next pair. Time, 2min 45sec. Victoria Derby, a sweepstaKe of 25 soys each, with 2000 soys added ; for three-year-olds j colts and geldings, 8.10; fillies, 8.5. One mile and a half. Mr. M. Gordon's br c Alawa, by Maltster — Crossfire (R. Lewis)... 1 Mr. C. Jeffries's b c Parsee, by Metal (imp.)— Pona (T. Clayton) 2 Mr. J. Mayo's b c Lord Nolan, by Positano (imp.) — Lady Lybia (W. H Smith) 3 Also started — Trafalgar, Mother Goose, Wai Ila, Tho Brewer, Demolition, and Monobel. Wai Ila led out of the straight from Alawa, Lord Nolan, Mother Goose, Trafalgar, Monobel, Demolition, Parsee, and The Brewer. At the bridge, Demolition raced into fourth place. Wai Ila led round the back, two lengths out from Alawa, Loid Nolan, and Mother Goose Wai Ila lost a length at the abattoirs, where Alawa and Lord Nolan were ruilmng neck and neck with Parsee, who made a fast mn, two lengths away, and The Brewer next. Wai Ila had then shot his bolt, and Alawa, on the inside, led round the turn from Lord Nolan, Parsee, ' The Brewer (under the whip), and Demolition. Alawa led into tho straight from Lord Nolan. Parsee passed Lord Nolan, while The Brewer, six lengths away, was fading. Alawa, full of running, going on, won by two and a half lengths, Parseo being eight lengths ahead" of Lord Nolan. Time, 2rain 35£ sec. Melbourne Stakes, .1 sweepstake of 20 soys each, with 1000 soys added ; \ weight for age. One mile and a quarN ter. Hon. A. Wynne's br h Peru, by Graf ton 1 (imp.) — Silver Coin, 4yrs, 9.0 ' 1 Mr. Gordanhas Khatan's Mooltan, 9.4 > 2 Messrs. Nettleford and Price's Pink 'Un, 9.4 3 Also started — Emir, Tulkeroo, Knox, Dyed Garments, Lady Wilde, and Sir Ajmer. Starting off, Peru, Tulkeroo, and Pink 'Un led, with Emir last. Tulkeroo led at the far turn from Peru, Knox, Sir Aymer, Mooltan, Dyed Garments, and Pink 'Un. Peru went to the front at the sheds from Tulkeroo and Knox. Mooltan made an effort to catch Peru, who, however, won by a length and a half, with three-quarters of a length between second and third. Time, 2min 7sec. Coburg Stakes, one mile. — lolaire, 10.0, 1; Verenice, 7.11, 2; Vavasor, 7.9, 3. Won by half a head, with a length, and a quarter between second und third. Time, lmin 40Jsec.
