WEEK-END SHOOTING.
RIFLEMEN AT TRENTHAM. THE GARRISON SHIELD MATCHES. Saturday was unpropitious for opon-air pastimes, and in a greater degree for rifle shooting than for a few other forms of sport; but, nevertheless, there was a muster not far short of 350 marksmen at Trenthajn. The parade state showed: Permanent Forces 13, D Battery 21, Engineers 31, Ileretaunga, Mounted Rifles 14, City Rifles 26, Guards 20, Civil Service Rifles 14, Post and Telegraph Rifles 40, Collego Rifles 22, Highland Rifles 32, Zealandia Rifles 19, Hutt Valley Rifles 14, Cycle Corps 14, Johnsonville Rifles 13,' Karori Riflo Club 28, unattached officers 5; total, 336. The firinz was superintended by Captain J. Duthie, and he was assisted by a number of officers belonging to the several corps of the Wellington garrison. The chief feature of tho day's shooting was tho first of three contests for the Wellington garrison shields^ — senior and Junior —between ten men teams representative of the different companies of the garrison. Five of these were classed senior, and ten junior. The first place in the seniors (on the day's shooting) waß won somewhat easily by tho City Rifles, a win which recent _ individual form had foreshadowed; but in the junior competition the unexpected happened, and the two favourite teams finished fourth and fifth respectively. The Zealandia Rifles got first place by a three point margin from Civil Service. There were 267 points between highest and .lowest scores in the juniors, but only 27 points between highest and lowest in the seniors. As the lowest senior team's score was 70 points ahead of the highest junior team's, tho correctness of the classification was well exemplified. The best individual score of the day\ was put on by Sergt. G. Tinney, of the Guards (32 at 200 yards, 32 at'soo yards, and 32 at 600 yards), being a total of 96 out of a possible 105. Amongst the junior teams the best individual score was that of Sergt. Bunckenburg, of the Zealandia Rifles (33 at 200 yards, 32 at 500 yards, and 28 at 600 yards). The final placing of the teams was as follows: — SENIOR SHIELD COMPETITON. City Rifles 838 Highland Rifles 825 Guards 822 Post and Telegraph Rifles ... 818 D Battery 811 . JUNIOR SHIELD COMPETITION. Zealandia Rifles 741 Civil Service Rifles ... .„ ... 738 Hutt Valley Rifles .., 679 Engineers ' 662 Post and Telegraph Rifles ... 647 Permanent Forces Rifle Club 629 College Rifles 628 Cycle Corps 623 Heretaunga Mounted Rifles 557 Johnsonville Rifles 474 LONG RANGE SHOOTING. While the shield matches were in progress, the Karori Riflo Club got oft" a match at 800 and 900 yards. Some fair shooting was made by some of the competitors—notably 32 out of 35, at 800 yards, by Rifleman Marchant, and 30 at 900 yards by Rifleman Lewer —but the bulk of the marksmen found the varying wind and dull light too much for them. Four of the competitors failed to finish firing in consequence of time not permitting, and thej will get off the remainder of their shots on another occasion. Tho results were as follow: — } [ [
