THE SUBURBS SEAT. MR. W. T. YOUNG AT SEATOUN.
Mr. W. T. Young, the Labour candidate for Wellington Suburbs, addressed the electors at the Tea Kiosk, Seatqun, last r.ight, Mr, G. Lightfoot presiding. After referring to many subjects already fully reported, Mr. Young advocated an amendment of the Tramways Act, so as to provide for a uniform examination of all motormen before a competent Government Board, which he contended would be a source of great protection to the travelling public, similar to that prevailing in our meivanuilo marine. He also urged the periodical Government inspection of brakes and otbe<* equipments-, and pointed out that the report of the commission of inquiry into the brakes in the Auckland electrical seivice was substantial evidence of the necessity of such inspection, and .further urged that the law should be altered so as to make it clear in every Order-in-Councii authorising the running of cars that it should be optional with the local" authority to run the cars on Good Friday and Christmas Day. He strongly criticised Mr. Williams in advocating a reduction in exemption under the income tax, which he contended wculd place the tax upon the shoulders of the workers. In reply to questions, Mr. Young said that he was inclined to favour the co-ojerativehouse-bbjing system for workers, whereby a worker would secure one-third of the amount required through co-operation, and the Government should provide the other two-thirds, which latter amount cctld be paid off through the medium of rent. At the conclusion of his address Mr. Young was accorded a vote of thanks and confidence, on the motion of Mr. Stewart.
