ATHLETICS IN CHRISTCHURCH.
[Br Te£kgbaph.— Spectai to Tbk Post. { CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. R. Opie, a young Canterbury College student who has shown considerable promise on the running track, has been credited with some very fast performances. At the Boys' High School sports recently he was timed in an old boys' race (200 yds) to do a shade over 21sec, but at an evening meeting of the Civil Service Club yesterday he was credited with winning his heat in a hundred yards off scratch in even time, and the final in ten and one-fifth. The watches may be, and no doubt will be, questioned, but Opie is in fine form, and if he trains on should be a candidate for championship honours later in the season. The Pioneer Club hopes to give Christchurch an opportunity of seeing the American champion runner, Guy Haskins, while he is staying with his people here. The club's spring meeting will probably be held early in December, and it is proposed to include a three-quarter mile scratch race and a mile handicap in the programme.
