The fourteen women arrested in connection with the disturbance in the Palace Yard, at the House of Commons, on Wednesday evening, appeared at the Westminster Police Court yesterday Twelve of them were fined £5 each, in default ,cne month's imprisonment. All elected to take the alternative. One case was adjourned, and a minor offender was discharged. The magistrate, Mr. A. A. Hopkins, addressing Miss Muriel Matters, one of the two ladies who padlocked themselves to tfie "grille" in the ladies' gallery in the House, said : "J would be so glad to receive from the Australian lady an expression of regret and a promise not to offend again." Miss Matters replied that she intended to do her best to improvo the conditions of women m Britain, adding that she "would not return to Australia until the fight was won !" Then she decided to go to gaol for a month. The twelve suffragists who decided to go to gaol will be sent to the third, division, and will wear prison dress and be employed in useful work. They will be liable to punishment for neglect of their tasks.
