PROGRESS OF THE WORK
CHMS'J'OHURCH, 30th June. The Truth Otira correspondent reports that th-? 60 h.p. boiler that was placed in position some time ago has been bricked in, and slow fives are now to be kept gr)ing to seapnn the brickwork preparatory to gelling up steam in a day
or two. The compressors are ready with tho -air pipes laid to the face of the heading. This machinery, together with the steam boiler, is now under cover, a compact building having been erected. It is expected to have a trial run of the machinery on Wednesday, when the Ingorsoll Sergeant rock borers will be given their initial spin. As the heading is now in excellent country, both dry and firm, the machines, after a turn or two have been taken out of them, may surpass the most sanguine expectations as to their boring capabilities. The surface water has disappeared altogether, and th© ground at the time of writing is of such a splendid nature that once it has been excavated the drive would stand capitally without timber, were such a thing required. Despite the troubled atmosphere that pervades the scene of operations in regard to labour, great activity is displayed in the transport and unpacking of machinery of all sorts and descriptions. Two large concrete mixers have recently come to hand. The floor of the extensive cement sked on the Rolleston river-bed presents a motley appearance, machinery of all kinds being stacked over it. Men are busily engaged hauling shingle from the riverbed for the power-house foundations. This is being done by means of a light aerial tramline worked by hand. On the Boaley Flat, where quite a township is springing up, operations are being busily carried on. The punch bowl water supply tunnels are going along at a solendid rate, nearly one-half of the 18 chains having now been accounted for. An aerial tramline 500 yards in length is being erected to carry pipes and other material from the roadway to the mouth of the water drivs, some 800 feet up ths mountain side.
