I HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT. The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following' cable from the High Commissioner, datfid London, 23rd May, 1908:—^The mutton market, ia quiet. There is a scarcity of prime quality mutton, especially Canterbury, with a limited de _ mand for poorer grades. Canterbury" brands are quoted at 4£d, and North Island at 3|d per lb. The lamb market is steady, with a limited demand. Large shipments aro arriving from New Zealand. Canterbury lamb is quoted at s£d, and other than Canterbury at 5| r l per lb. The beef market is dull, and prices aro irregular owing to competition of good quality Argentine. New Zealand hindquarters are quoted at 3£d. and forequartors at 3d per lb. The butter marketis quiet, but a moderate business is doing. Choicest New Zealand butter is quoted at 110s; Danish, Ills; Australian, 103s; Siberian, 100s per cwt. The cheese market is steady. New Zealand white makes afe quoted at 60s, and coloured, which is in large supply, at b7s. Canadian new season's make 'ia quoted at 59s per owt. The hemn market is quiet,_ with small business doing. The following are the [current quotations: — Good fair grade on I spot, £25 15s ; fair grade on spot, £24 10s; fair current Manila, on spot, £24 10s. May to July shipments — Good fair grade, £26; fair grade, £24 10s; fair current Manila, i £24 10s. The cocksfoot market is steady at last quotations. The wool market ia advancing steadily ior medium and coarse crossbreda, all grades, which now show 5d premium o-\er closing rates at last sale. Merinos are firm. — — »»» * Messrs. Dalgety and Co., Ltd., Wellington, have received the following cable messages from their London house, under date of the 21st instant: — "Wool. — Sales continue firm and prices are rather higher, especially for greasy medium and coarse j crossbred and good merino combin wools ] (free). The programme of sales will be shortened by three days, closing 29th May. Butter. — Market weak. The Copenhagen official is 1 kroner (about Is lid) per cwt. higher. The total imports of butter into the United Kingdom for ending 16th inst amounted to 77,000cwt, as compared with 103,000cwt for the corresponding week of 1907, showing a decrease of 26,000 owt. Finest, 104s. Owing to poor demand for Australian it may be found necessary to place in cool stores. Frozen meat — There is a pood demand for frozen lamb, but at unchanged prices. Frozen beef and mutton: Fair demand at unchanged prices. Rabbit Skins. — There aro indications of an advance in prices. Tallow — Since our last advices tallow is at par to 3d per .cwt lower. The decline is chiefly on beef and mixed tallow of good colour." Messrs Murray, Roberts and Co. have received the following wool market cablegram from their London house, Messrs. Sanderson, Murray and Co., dated 22nd May: — "The market is very firm. Compared with last sales' closing rates coarse to medium crossbred has advanced 5 per cent."
