What it means to run an ocean "flyer" under ordinary conditions of wage-pay-ing may be understood when it is mentioned that 800 persons are employed on the Cunard turbine Mauretania. This vessel has eight officers under the captain, 15 petty officers, 40 seamen, two carpenters, one joiner, two Marconi operators. The chief engineer has 29 engineers, three refrigerator engineers, 22 greasers, 192 firemen, and 120 trimmers, or a total of 366. The purser's staff includes three assistants, chief steward and five assistants, two matrons, 40 cooks, two bakers, 305 stewards, 10 stewardesses, two typists, three mail sorters, two barbers, and one inspector.
Italy is not asleep. A slip is being prepared at Castellamare for a vessel of 19,000 tons. She will be 492 ft long be-^ tween perpundiculars and 70ft broad. The speed will be 24 knots, with 30;000 i.h.p., and the contract price is over £2,000,000. This is the first of four of a similar type to be constructed for the Italian navy, and 6,000,000 lire (a lire is equal to the French franc, which is worth about 10d), will be spent on her during 1908. The other units of the new programme include six 3000-ton 28knot scouts, and a host of destroyers, l toxoedo-boats, and submersible^
