LOCAL AND GENERAL. | To-morrow evening the curious thousands in the city streets will be furnished with a full report of the Britons' opening match at Masterton. At 8 o'clock a special edition of The Post will be issued with details of the play. In addition to the chronicle of a game which is keenly interesting all New Zealand, will be reports of local Rugby, Association, and hockey matches, as well as the latest sporting news. The proprietors of The Evening Post have presented two gold medals, for competition among Wellington's representatives against Britain next Wednesday. It is desired to give one of the trophies to the best back and the other to the best forward, and the question will be decided by puWic vote. Voting coupons will be published in the special edition to-morrow night. The postal authorities advise that the Boveric, which left San Francisco on the 19th instant for Auckland, has on board a large American mail for New Zealand, and will be due in Auckland about the 9th June. The Prince of Wales's Birthday (June 3rd), will be observed as a public holiday in the Government offices. A payment of £3158 2s 6d to Messrs. Heenan and Froude, for construction of the new destructor at Clyde-quay, was authorised by the City Council last night. Empire Day, 24th June, is not to be observed as a holiday by the Wellington shopkeepers. At a meeting last night they decided to observe the Prince of Wales's Birthday, 3rd June, instead. Confirmation was made last night of the resolution passed by the City Council, two weeks ago, extending from 10 p.m. to 10.30 p.m. the hours during which billiard saloons may be kept open. Brooklyn is to have a new Baptist Church. A fund has already been started for that purpose, £115 being subscribed on Wednesday as a nucleus for a building fund. The existing building, although in excellent order, is now too small. "It is the intention of the Government to gazette the business days, not the holidays." said Mr. H. H. Seaton, president of the New Zealand Shopkeepers' Association, when speaking in a sarcastic vein at the annual meeting last evening. The City Council has authorised the Town Clerk to attend the next meeting of the Wellington Licensing Committee for the purpose of objecting to any attempt to transfer from the council's freehold property on Lambton-quay the license granted in i-esoect of the Occidental JSffink,
