CITY COUNCIL.

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. MATTERS OF INTEREST TO CITIZENS. Tne City Council met last evening. Present: The Mayor (the Hon. T. W. Hislop), and Councillors Morrah, Hindmarsh, M'Laren, Carmichael, Fisher, Biss,- Shirtcliffe, Hales, Ballinger, Cohen and Luke. BATHS AND RESERVES. The Baths and City Reseives Committee recommended : — (1) Thau the lease of part ot the Town Belt ott Jiell-roacl, held by Mr. J. H. Helhwell, be renewed for a iurther period of three years, at a rental of one pound per annum. (2) That the Wellington Kugby iJmon be granted the use of Newtown. Park for iheir representative match on the 3rd June, and that they be empowered to tako up a collection. (3) That the offer of Mr. Henry Bender to sell the council a merry-go-round be not accepted. The report was adopted without alteration. A proposal for municipalisation. of the Athletic Park is reported under a. separate heading. - BY-LAWS AND STREET LIGHTS. The By-laws and Street Lighting Committee made the following recommendations : — (1) That the application of Mr. Sampson Williams for permission to extend Buckingham-street and to subdif vide section 5, Melrose, be granted, provided that the ■ applicant forms and grades the road to the satisfaction of the city engineer. ('£) That tHd application of Mr. Thomas Miller, of Adelaide-road, for permission to erect a temporary shed at Adelaide-road be granted, on conditions laid down by the city engineer. (3) That the application oi Mr. T. Young for the authorisation of a right-of-way off Taranaki-street Extension to give access to the rear of shops in Oourtenay-place, be granted on conditions imposed by the city engineer. (4) That the application of Mr. A. B. Fitcheto for the authorisation of a right-of-way off Ohico-road be granted subject to the conditions imposed by the city engineer. (5) That the application of Mr. T. W. Ward, of Roseneath, on behalf of Miss Miller to erect additions at 24, Martin-square, section 22, part town acre 229, be granted, with the exception of the fence sfiown on. tho plan forwarded with the application, and that the granting of such application shall be in connection with the double-fronted dwelling situated in the • front of the section. _ (6) That the annual report of the Chief Sanitary Inspector be printed and circulated. (7) That the following lamps be erected : — Jessie-street, one lamp ; corner Fairview-road and Plun-kett-street, one lamp ; Mitchell-street, Brooklyn, one lamp ; Mem-street, two lamps. (8) That the decision of the City Engineer in refusing to issue a permit for alterations to a building at Little Taranaki-street on account of the proEosal not being in accordance with the y-laws be adhered to. The report was adopted as brought down. FINANCE AND PROPERTY. The Finance and Property Committee recommended :—(1): — (1) That the claim of Mr. James Reid for compensation on account of the alteiation of the level of Goa-street and Moxham-avenue be not entertained. (2) That the otter of the Wellington Professional Orchestra to give one or more concerts on Sunday afternoons or evenings, in the Town Hall or at the Botanical Gardens, be accepted with thanks, and that the Town Clerk be authorised to make arrangements. (3) That tne sum of £50 be accepted in full settlement of Mr. BethelJ's liability under the bond for the construction of Kenwyn-terrace, and that tho bond be' cancelled. (4) That a, sum of £1000 be placod on vhe estimates tor providing new cases for tne Museum and Library, and for the erection of a wall not included in specifications, also for'the underpinning of the present building. (5) That accounts amounting to £8564 2s 8d be passed for payment. The committee reported that they had an interview wjth the secretary of the Drivers' Union, with reference to the rates of pay for tho corporation drivers. The committee now recommended that the rates be as follows : — Genera) drivers, £2 8s per week ; drivers of scavenging carts, -4)2 16s per week ; broom men, £2 12s 6d per week; household refuse drivers, £3 per week. Scavengers' wages are to include Sunday work. The report was adopted. THE TRAMWAYS AND POWER COMMITTEE. The committee recommended that tenders Be called for the supply of poles and ironbark piles, and that Mr. G. Townsend, accountant to the electric lighting department, be granted one month's leave of absence. The report was adopted. OUTLYING DISTRICTS. , The committee reported that it had visited the Crofton Downs estate, and recommended that the consent of the council be given to the construction of the streets, subject to the alterations required by the City Engineer (in connection with the approach from the-railway to the north end of the estate, and the deviation required at Witton's farm), all details* in connection with the construction, of the roads, drainage, etc., to be carried out in accordance with the council's requirements.
