STREET WIDENING.

IMPROVING MANNERS-STREET. • The narrow streets of the city and the growing congestion of traffic was again brought under the notice of the City Council last night, when Councillor Fletcher moved : — "That the council take into serious consideration the cniestion of undertaking the ■widening of Mannersstreet (as from Willis to Cuba-street), and hereby resolves to take such steps as may bo tieemed necessary to effect the improvement of this congested and important thoroughfare." Councillor Fletcher, in introducing tlie motion, said that the work 'was of a pecessary character. Some partp of Manners-street were not only congested,' but dangerous, and he thought +he present time was opportune for dealing with the work, particularly as there were a lot of old ramshackle buildings which would soon have to be demolished. Also ho wished to alter his motion so as to include part 'of Taranaki-street instead of Cuba-street. ' The portion of the city ho referred to in his motion did not reflect any credit on the Dominion, and he desired to wipe out the reproach. The motion was seconded by Councillor Fisher. .Councillor Smith agreed with the motion, but thought there would be difficulties in the way if they went as far as Taranaki-street, as proposed. The motion -was carried without alteration.
