KILBIRNIE TRAMS.
DEPUTATION TO THE COUNCIL. A deputation of residents of Nowtown end Kilbirnio fyaited upon tho Mayor and councillors at tho City Council last evening. Mr. W. P. Barbor, M.P., who headed the deputation, reported his arguments in favour of tho extension of the line from South Wellington through Kilbirnio, via Constable-street, as already fully set out in the report of the recent public mooting held nt Newtown, in connection with the movement. He presented the resolutions ndopted at that meeting. In regard to tho .Mayor's suggestion as to raising the money. The committee would undertako that tho extension would bo largely profitable, and the expense of tho work would be speedily met by the fares collected on tho cars when tho work Wji3 carried out, ond tho lino in full working order. He repeuted^th© complaint of South Wellington business people that business, which formerly went to South Wellington, from the Kilbirnie district now went to tho city through tho tunnel. Ho felt that the work must bo dono soon, as tho tunnel was quito inadoquato for tho rapidly growing traffic, and the extension would give an alternntivo routo to Miratnar and Seatoun. The Muyor pointed out that the extension had been before tho conncil fiom time to time, and a report was prepared by tho engineer/ This report ■wns hold ovev for financial reasons. The council wns just as much impressed with thn scheme of cxtunsion as was the deputation, and was thoroughly conveyghnb with iho advantages that wouW accrue from looping up the linos indicated. Tho work would go on as soon as possible, and would bo considered among tho works of this year. The deputation thon withdrew.
