IMPORTED FRUIT AND PLANTS THE REGULATIONS.
Regulations with respect to the importation and inspection of fruit and plants are contained in this week's Gazette. The notice contains a definition of "fruit" and "plant." "Fruit"' means the edible product of any plant, and includes the peel, skin, or shell of i such product, and also the seeds ot | such plant, whetner such fruit is or !o | not attached to the plant, TJie only ports of entry for fruit and plants arc , Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. The Bluff is a port for the i entry of fruit only. Grapes imported from Australia must be accompanied by a certificate from tho Department of Agriculture showing that the fruit is free from disease, that no phylloxera or any species of friut fly is known to exist within a mile of the vineyard where the grapes were grown and that no grapevine foliage or wood is attached. There is no charge for inspection, but the fees are given for fumigation, dipping or destruction of *ruit or plants. Certificates of freedom from disease are also required in the caso of fruits other than grapes, but bananas or passionfruit will be excepted if tho certificates states that the fruit was shipped in an unripe condition. Power is given to inspectors to fumigato at tho expense of the, owner fruit or plants which are not accompanied by the necessary declarations as to freedom from disease, and power is given to the inspector to seize and destroy disease-infected fruit. The fee for fumigation is from Id per case coming from the Cook Islands to 6d per caso from other places. The fee for destroying fruit is 6d per case.
