As a result of correspondence between the Austrajasian Seamen's Union and the Anchor Shipping and Foundry Company, of Nelson, regarding the claims of lamp trimmers to be paid overtime when required to get up steam for donkey boilers when the company's vessels are in port, intimation has been received by Mr. Young, secretary of the union, that the company has agreed to pay overtime to its lamp trimmers whenever such extra duties are required of them. On tho voyage out from London of the steamer Arawa several of the persons on board the vessel formed a dramatic club, which was much appreciated by the other passengers. Two of the pieces produced were act 1 from "II Pagliacci," and also "Ici on Parle Francais.' The proceeds from the entertainments are to be devoted to the Lifeboat Institute of England. At a short sitting of the court held by Mr. Inglis, J.P., at Petone this morning, two first offending inebriates were convicted and ordered to pay costs. Another llaori war veteran, jddward Alfred Drury, died at Wellington lj^st night. He served under Lieut. -General Cameron, Major Gallaway, and Lieut. - General Bal Nevis, in 1862 and 1863, in the No. 1 Royal Company Auckland Rifle Volunteers. Of late years deceased nad been employed as a messenger in the Government service. "A good deal of rumour and nonsense," was the keynote of the comment made by the Prime Minister at Mr. Lawry's "social" in reference to some suggestion which he said had been made by somo of the friends of the Government party— he would not say it came from those opposed to the Government —as to a possible "swapping of seats" in connection with tho coming election. The people - who made this suggestion could, however, have very little idea of the mettle of which public men wore made. Any man who was made of the true material would never run away from a district which had supported him for a 'ong term of years, but he would stick by it, even if there was a prospect of a hard battle. "I do aot think there is anything at all in these suggestions of swapping," said tho Primo Minister. "I believe there is a good deal of rumour and a good deal of nonsense in them, and perhaps a great deal of sugcstion, it might- be said, on the part of some who desire, and perhaps not unnaturally, to be returned to Parliament themselves. "' An amusing incident happened to the Hon. U. Fowlds's party whilst at the Tuhara hui on the occasion of the opening of the new school (says the Napier Telegraph). With all due respect to the forms and ceremonies of his ancients the rangatira of the settlement, who happened to be the chairman of the School Committee, presented his distinguished visitor, the Hon. G. Fowlds, after a good cTeal of formality, with a novel present in the shape of a sackful of water melons— the pick of the garden— as a special mark of favour. The gift was duly acknowledged with courte&y. Whilst tho Minister and nis companions, however, were in at lunch near by, a tribe of hungry Maor ; boys cams upon the sack, and doubtless thinking they had "struck a patch" in the good things provided for tho hui, set to work on die contents. When tho Hx>n. Mr. Fowlds and the others came out fiom luncheon only tlnec solitary iielons remained ; all the- others had baan eageily devoured with considerable -elish Tria!b of henes both bpforo and after sales \nll be given if ciecjre;! to-morrow in connection with ?»ie?si\» Daigety and Co'i fciinightly hcise s?lp at Wcll.'uqtcn. A list of horses de cribed a> uu'labla ior delhery carta, vans, etc., is advertised in this issue.
