HUTT AND PETONE. LAST NIGHT'S COUNCIL MEETINGS.

HOSPITAL PATIENTS. " The Lower Hutt Borough Council met last night. The Mayor (Mr. T. A. Pcterkin) presided, and there were in attendance Councillors Russell, O'Sulli\an, Ward, Hodgkins, Wildsmith, Ross, Judd and Baldwin. Subsequently the j Mayor wealed his, seat in favour of ! Councillor Rufsell in order to attend another function. The total amount of accounts passed fov payment wr.ts 5470 12s 30d. In reply to an enquiry by tho council, the Wellington District Hospital reported that the cases from the Lower Hutt treated at tho hospital for two years ended 31st. December .were .- — 1906, 50 ; 1907, 42. Councillor Ward termed the report vague, and said he wished to see the amount tho borough rcccivpd in return for Us contribution in tho way of charitable aid. The council contributed between £400 and £500 a year, and it ccemed from the retur-i ihot it was paying on an average £10 Cor cadi case. This trouble had been frequently noted in seaside places, and so far as the houses along the sea front wpvp concerned, he thought that tho council would bo justiSed in compelling all householders to use tho borough supply. * A telegram was also received from the landlord of the hou^c in question, requesting that the necessaiy connections with the borough supply should be made. The necessity for tho provision of public baths at the- Lower Hutt was emphasised 'on the Borough Council last evening by 'the Wellington Centre of the N.Z.-A Swimming Association. Councillor Ross cxpreibed the opinion that the council should not bsar the expense of public baths. In Sydney and Melbourne they were run by private people, and very successful they were too. Councillor Baldwin stated that a site had already been chosen on the river bank for a public bath, and a shed was about to be erected by private subscription. Councillor Russell thought the council should further consider the subject./ "We have the water and pumps," ha continued. "The question is a site. 1 think the recreation ground " Councillor Ross : "It's too small now." Councillor Riisscll : "But there is a question of increasing it." On the motion of Councillor Russell, the engineer was asked to report op the cost of oonciutc baths as soon Wi lie could find 'time. Refreshment, Mesdanies Twomey, Hickey, and Bowden. Bran-tub, Mrs. Patterson and Miss Ticman. A special attraction is promised each evening. Last night some of 'Miss B. Putnam's pupils provided a programme of dances. The Petone Borough Council's employee;, wish to hold j. yearly outing, but do not want to be out of pocket to th& extent of a, day's pay. The council was accordingly approached last night with Lhe request that iC fhould giant a yearly holiday on full pay for tho pin poses of enabling the employees to hold a picnic. Thp lequest was, however, deferred till the consideration of tht> estimates in March, next. PETONE MUNICIPAL MATTERS. Last hitfht's meeting of the Petone Borough Council was attended by tha Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan) and Councillors Coles, Short, Nicholson, Harding, Smith, Lodder, Southgate, Castle, and Colquhonn. One case of. diphtheria was reported fay a local medical officer. * A copy of the city engineer's report in connection with the maintenance of the Hutt-road during the present year ua* read and adopted. A notification was received from the resident engineer New Zealand railways to tho effect that a 6ft footpath from Woollen Company's entrance, on the weet side of the Hutt-road, to the hotel, would be formed. This is consequent upon the road being enlarged in connection with the duplication of tho Hutt- Wellington Railway line. The Hector 'Land Syndicate asked permission to erect s>emi-detatched houses on the balance . of unsold sections in Hector-street. It was decided to forward the 'applicants a copy of the bylaw on the subject. Certain letters relative to the re-n-./vatiug of a house in Richmond-sheet, owned by the Public Health Trusjee, were received from the District Health Officer and the owner pointing out thai the recjuired repairs would be effected immediately. It was decided to lake action against the pwner unless the requirements were attended to in 'a week's, time. Several sugge&ted amendments to tho council's Offensive Trade Bylaws, 1908, received from the District Health Of- | fic<r, were read and adopted. [ The caretaker of the Domain, Mr. i F Crampton, wrote rescinding his previous notice of resignation from the position of caretaker of, tho Domain and I Korokoro lamp-lighter. It was resolved io ro-cngage him at a salary of £25 per annum.' E. W. Woodhouse and Co. submitted a subdivisional plan of land adjacent to Cuba-street, for' the council's approval. Subject to the amount of the estimated cost of tarring the foitpaths being deposited, the Mayor was empowered to finally pass "the subdivision. The owners of Stutter's buildings in Jackson-street .cxpiesscd their willingness to ramove back from level of the footpath at the expense of the council, a portion of the outbuildings, together with the iron fence fronting trio footpath in Jackson-street, in exchange for a strip of land owned by the council at the rear of the buildings. Some years ago th.3 council placed H? water mains and lately its telephone posts upon land facing the Huttroad, and leading iri the direction of the Koiokoro Stream. Recently land in the vicinity was bought by Barber and Co., who now havo|asked by what right or authority the council had laid down tho pipes, etc. Failing a satisfactory answer within ecve'n days proceedings, it was stated, would be taken.
