THE RHODES SCHOLAR. MR . ZIMAN ELECTED.

The election of the fifth Rhodes Scholar for New Zealand was made yesterday afternoon at Government House by a committee consisting of His Excellency the Governor (Lord Plunket), the Chancellor of the University (Sir Robert Stout), Mr. Justico Denniston, and Professors Egerton (Auckland), M'Kenzie (Wellington), Evans (Chri^tchurch), and Gilray (Dunedin). Mr. J. W. Joynt, Registrar of the University, also attended. Five candidates had been nominated— Messrs. S. M. Ziman (Auckland University College), G. V. Bogle (Victoria College), H. Revell (Canterbury College), J. A. Bartrum (student of Otago University College and representative of the Chrir-tchurch Boys' High School) and A. t M. Finlayson (Otago University Collego). All the candidates presented themselves, except Mr. Bartrum. After a deliberation' lasting from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., and a personal interview with each candidate, the committee selected Mr. Ziman as tho fifth Rhodes Scholar from Now Zealand. SCHOLASTIC CAREER. Mr. Ziman was born in Wellington but has spent the greater part of his twenty-one yeais in Auckland, where his father, Mr. J. Ziman, J.P., is- engaged in business. Clyde-quay was the first school attended by Mr. Ziman, who continued his education at Newton West School, Auckland, and at the Auckland Grammar School, where he held a junior foundation scholarship. In 1900 he won a senior scholarship, and three years ' later with a junior University scholarship .opened his University career. A brilliant mathematician and a strenuous student, Mr. Ziman in ISOS added the Sir Georgo Grey Scholarship to his laurels, and the following year passed his ilnal examination for the Bachelor of Science degree and qualified for the senior, scholarship in pure and applied mathematics. He was informed yetterday that ho had gained the M.Sc. degree in the November examination with first class honours in mathematics and mathematical physics, and second class honours in physical science. ATHLETICS. In athletics Mr. Ziman's forte has been rifle shooting, in which he has achieved distinction by winning many prizes when. at the Auckland Grammar School. He is at present endeavouring to organise a rifle club at the Auckland 'Cniversity College. In the football field Mr. Ziman has played for tho senior eleven at College. Hodke'yV. ktid* swimming have '•also furnished (Opportunity for showing his all-round enthusiasm for athletics. He- has represented Iho Auckland University College. , on tho track at the Easter tournaments. In the social welfare of college lifo he has been deeply concerned and it at present President of the Students' . Association at Auckland.
