Tho Minister Tor Defence, Mr. Ewing, ha 3 concluded preparations .or the establishment of a cordite factory noar Melbourne, and a small arms factory at Lithgow, New South Wales. Under Mr. Deakin's defence schomo it is proposed to spend £221,000 annually. This includes interest. Shore armaments arc estimated to cost £342,000, and. towards theso tljo Government would contribute £50,000 each year till tho work was finished. The Federal Premier states that he has been advised that tho neces^ai-y guns cuuld be built in Australia. The question of the establishment of a small arms factory has been to tho fore for somo time. In September last the Federal House of Representatives voted £32,000 for toe establishment of such a factory.
