MIRAMAR BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The Miramar Borough Council met last night. Present . —The Mayor (Mr. C. J. Crawford), Councillors Brodic, Bell, and M'Leod. In reference to the laying of the gas main along tho old farm road to the city boundary, tho Mayor paid the gas company had been asked to submit a draft Order in Council. When that was done, tho Government would be adviser! that the courcil had given it* approval. A request was received from residents in tho vicinity of the park, asking that Torn-street be made a stopping place for the tiam cars. Referred to the Tramways Committee. A number of workers petitioned the council to have the workers' ' car despatched in tho morning a quarter of an hour later from Miramar. They also asked that the evening car from town should run right through. Referred to Tramways Committee with a recommendation that an endeavour be made to meet the wishes of petitioners. It was agreed to allow the Vivianhtreot Sunday School to have the use of the Seatoun Park for a picnic on tho 29th inst., a of ton shillings being charged to cover cost of a caretaker for the day, and for clearing up the ground after tho picnic. The Mayor comphined of the damage dono to trees in # the 'park at a ■ recent picnic. "An application from tho postal' authorities that tho charge for conveyance of mail 3 ir. the Seatoun line be at tho tame rate as the Miramar North line was granted. The following report was presented regarding the collection of household rubbish : — "The difficulty in connection with the proposal that household rubbish should .be regularly collected and, ie~ moved lies in the rinding of a suitable tip for the rubbish. In other boroughs . a site can usually be found where adjoining property "is not injuriously affected by the disposition of rubbish. In cities, destructors cope with tho diiii- J culty. To tip the rubbish into the sea would necessitate the employment of a steamer to tow out a barge into deep water, and the annual oxpense would be considerable. The alternative, appears to bo the purchase of -lands suitable for the purpose whioh would subsequently be used for a destructor site. Until the method of disposal is settled, tho details in working the scheme cannot bo considered. " Councillor East said the present arrangements in re.3pji:t to tho removal of rubbish were not satisfactory. The council was throwing away money — or at least, they were not making' tho best use of thsir expenditure. Tho Mayor said at first ho thought Rabbit Island might be utilised as ' a place for depositing rubbish, but'the oh. jection was that there was no -road to it. In his opinion, tho work should bo performed 'by the borough fitaft. The position would never bo 'satisfactory till j the corporation took the matter in hand. It was agreed that provision for the i carrying on of the work be made in tho ecti'Tiates for the coming year. I It was rcsohed to take over Mapurastieet. ' I
