PETONE AND HUTT NEWS. THE PIPE AND TRAFFIC BRIDGE.

There weye in attendance at last night's meeting of the Lower Ilutt Borough Council, the Mayor (Mr. Peterkin) and Councillors Hollard, Baldwin. Russell, Judd, O'Sullivan, Ward, Wildsmith, Ross and Hodgins. The question for discussion was the council's share of maintenance of the now bridge across the Hutt river, at Petono. After some little discussion clause nine of tho agreement between the Wellington City Council and local bodies was agreed upon. This provides that the bridges when constructed shall be niaintained by the contributing bodies in such proportions as shall be agreed upon between tho local bodies, in default of which in such proportions as tho Governor shall decide under the Public Works Act, 1905. Councillor Ward expressed himself highly satisfied with tho outcome, and emphasised that the shorter route which would be afforded a large number of Hutt people Would be of much benefit. At the same time he stated that tho wear and tear of the main bridge would be considerably lessened. All councillors were agreed that matters pertaining to the construction of the bridge, should bo pushed forward with expedition. The position now is that the City Council now only requires a constructing authority from, the Government to go on with the work immediately. MISCELLANEOUS. Mr. W. H. Gifford, instructor in shorthand at the Petone Technical Sehdol since its inception, has resigned the position. The Working Men's Club has appointed Mr. li. Wylie its representative on the Technical School Board. There was a good attendance at the Hutt Valley Horticultural Society's Show yesterday, and the event has proved a great success. In the competition. for 1 the best collection of vegetables, Mr. F. Westbury had a splendid display, but was disqualified as his exhibit contained more than the specified number of varieties. Tho following rinks will represent the Petone Bowling Club in matches to-morrow against Wellington : — Jones, Alexander, Renai, Dr. Ross (skip) ; Russell," Castle, -Melhuish, Southgate (skip).
