THE CARRINGTON ESTATE. THE COURT'S AWARD.
The Carrington estate near Carterton waa taken compulbomly by the Go\ernment last your for pui poses of clofpv settlement. A Compensation Court [ consisting of his Honour the Chief Justice, and Messrs. James M'Kerrow and 11. R. Bunny, assessors, sat to consider the amount due by tho Government to the owner, Mr. W. 11. Booth. The Land Purchase Board recommended that £50,000 bo oltoieri by tho Government for tho property, but this was not agreed to. The owner claimed £79,600. he area of the estate was 6262 nccev. 'i ho court allowed Mr. Booth to reserve 3000 acres, as he was entitled to do under the law. After hearing-evi-dence on both sjclrs aa to value, the court awarded claimant £39,155. The property is to bo given up in March of next year.
Mr. F. de J. Clore, architect in charge of alterations at Ohivo Home, intimated to the Trustees of tho Benevolent Instittf.ion yesterday that drain pipes exposed during works were found to bo badly leaking "at every joint." The particular drain would be set right, but the board bhould got the other drains tested, foi thoy might also prove to bo seriously faulty. The board instructed the master of the Home (Mr. A. H. Truebridge) to inspect all drains o.:< far as possible, and to make a leport upon the game to the trustees^
