BIG GUN FIRING. SATISFACTORY SHOOTING.

The Wellington Naval Artillery, which is in camp at Mahanga Bay, continued its annual big gun firing last night and this morning. The Hongkong target was towed by the Janie Seddon, Lieut Standish, of the Permanent Artillery, being on board as range officer. Last night the six pounder Nordjjnfeldts and the twelve pounder quick-firers at Fort Ballance were used, and the light being good the shooting was satisfactory. When the men resumed this morning the harbour was obscured by smoke, and for about half an hour the target could not be seen. At 5.30 o'clock a southerly breeze sprang up, and dispelled the smoke, and firing with the eight inch guns at Fort Gordon was proceeded with, good shooting being done. The Kau Point detachment will probably fire to-morrow, and after that the examinations and class firing will be commenced. Colonel Robin and the other members of the Defence Council will visit the camp to-night, when fort-manning will be gone through. Lieut. -Colonel Campbell is supDrvising the big gun shooting. Captain Symon, of the Defence Department, is adjutant in charge of the camp, and A ' >T-vaisT -vais are immediately under the ,-.^v of Captain Menzies.
