At the ordinary monthly meeting of the Horowhenua County Council Mr. "JW'er Best was appointed valuer for the ■j**« jiSfto Riding in connection with tho Government valuation. Tho tenders of Messrs. Winter and Close for the Levm-Kereru-road, at 6s 6d, and the Levin-Foxton-road, at 10s psr square yard, were accepted. The county engineer reports that he j is unable to obtain tenders for some of j tho road-making, as contractors were j hopeless of getting the necessary men. A special meeting of tho council was held to strike a late in coine - .tioa with the £2000 loan lor the road from Warphanga, bridge to the Forks, on the Gor^e-ioad, in To Horo Hiding. Thero has been every promi&c of heavy rain, but a strong wind hus completely blown all clouds away, and 'the heat is still oppressiva. OTAKI, This Day. Another meeting of those interested in the formation of a bowling club for Otaki was held, but as very rhoit notice had been given only a meagre attendance was | present. Mr. T. O'Piourkc occupied tho chair. It was decided that a clnb bo formed, and that }ir. 31'Bea til's olfcr of a leasehold section be accepted. The following were elected a committee: — Messrs. The matron of the Molway Home hating been granted a, holiday, Mrs. Boyes takes charge during hia absence. Two sm.iil fires occurred yesterday. One v;as in a grass paddock in Essexstreet. About an acie of grass was destroyed. The brigade did splendid work as the paddock is in the vicinity of sevo- i ral houses, which were in danger. The other firo was a fniall outbreak at night at T. M'Cracken's premises; Queen-street. Little damage was done.
