CIVIL SERVICE TESTS. EDUCATION BOARD SCHOLARSHIPS.

THE PASSES. Sixty-seven candidates enteied for the Wellington Education Board senior scholarship examinations; the syllabus for which is that presented for the Civil Service junior examinations. Three of the sixty-seven failed to attend tho examinations, seven failed to qualify, and the remainder passed. English and arithmetic wero compulsory subjects, and choico of three others had to bo made. Twenty-five candidates took geography, seven magnetism and electricity, four heat and light, nine chemistry, four physics, six physical measurements, fifty-seven mathematics, fortynine Latin, four French, seven bookkeeping, and four drawing. The examination results show that the District High School pupils did very well indeed in competition with tho secondary colleges in respect of this examination, which concerned work done in tho first two years after completion of the primary school course. After the two years' course already, alluded to, the District High Schools cannot be expected to compete with schools staffed as a secondary school proper. The board has. recognised this fact by allowing the winners of senior scholarships to select the schools at which they will continue their education, an advantage which is not conceded to winners of junior board scholarships. The amount of money to be disposed of by the Wellington Education Board i:i £200, and the scholarships include travelling allowances to the nearest secondary school. If winners are obliged to liveaway from their homes an allowance of £40 is made. The list of successful candidates is as follows : — Mary Edith E. Murray, Masterton, D.H.S 1571 Robert W.
