Thi3 is the longest distance yet swum at any cluu carnival localiy. The race in clothes should be an interesting e,vont, and oue which should be encouraged as a Jouudatiou of liie-saVing instruction. Xho Masterton Club's carnival on, Auniversaiy Day was well ■ patronised by swimmers irom outblde that town, and a good aay's sport was enjoyed. Besides the Wellington team a party (whipu included- O. Abton, a lato member of the Swifts Club) journeyed from "Woodville. The committee had been to some trouble to riueorato the Park Lake, at which the gathering was held, and were very attentive to the wants Qf visitors. One thing, however, which militated againist the enjoyment ol the gathering was tho lack ot seating accommodation for spectators. Tho success of F. Koberts in the 75yde Wairarapa Championship and the 30yds Scratch Eace was expected, and proved popular with tho onlooker*. r\ Bennett, of Woodville, won both the. plungo and running and standing dive, proving himself easily tho best of the competing divers. The high dive was won by JR. Ronayne, with R. Nelson second. Both these men ara members of tho Thorndon Club. The trick diving was a tussle between C. Moore and F. Roberts, tho former gaining the on account of the general neatness of his exhibition. Of the Masterton swimmers H. Shuttle, •worth, who won the final of the HJUydB Inter-club Race, ia a promising swimmer, . whilst H Bridge had a day out, being placed first in the 25yds, 40yds, and b6yds club events. The club was unfortunato in selecting Anniversary Day for its meeting, as the Woraer Bay Carnival attracted most of the local swimmers, many c*f whom would otherwise have journeyed to Masterton. "Header" has_ to thank an enthusiast for the following" notes on the Woreer Bay meeting: — The weather conditions were dfead against the committee in thoir efforts to see the swimming events through, but, mainly through the energy of Mr. D. "Weir, tho whole of the programme) tritU the exception of the duck hunt, was carried out. The best "go" of tho day was the IOOj-db Residents' Race, which was fought out between E. S. Forne and R. A. Evenson The latter conceded Forne on« second, and only overhauled him within a few feet of the line. W. Bey, who gained first place in the 75yds and second in tho 50yds Bracelet, is swimming better than he was last season. H. A.Ehford had a good chance in the 75vds final, but spoilt it by swimming a bad course. > Freyberg'B win in the 100 yds was gained by hi* good judgment in swimming an inshore course, and so keeping clear of the ruck, where a good deal of unavoidable fouling went. on. J. Lynch, who finished seoond, was kept out of first place through being unable to get through the field early enough. The bracelet was won by G. R. Pateraon, a young swimmer with a good stylo. It was fortunato that good swimmers were appointed to tho positions of judges, otherwise there would have been work in plenty for a life-saving team, as on two occasions the judges' boat filled and left tho officials to the tender mcrcich of tho elements. The Woodvillc Club's Carnival takes placo next Wednesday in the Coronation. Bath, and a programme of fifteen events lias been drawn up. Mr O. Aston is now acting as hon. secretary of the club, which is a good thing for the club if ho infuses the energy into swimming matters there that he did in Wellington. Tho evening club races will be rcfumed next week by the Swifts, who have Ect down a 100 yds handicap for dpcibion on Moijdaju. entries clofin?, to-nizht.
