AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

. « THE CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING. The various amateur athletics centres of the Dominion have apparently determined to be represented by their best men at Saturday's championship carnival. Auckland has a couple of promis.ing athletes in S. J. Martin and E. M'Kay, who, with the record holders and ex-champion, W. H. Madill, should score heavily in the field events. The recently-formed centre, Southland, will be represented by W. J. Trembath and R. E. Bust. Tieinbath comes with a good reputation as a middlo distance runner, and, although making his first attempt in championship company, is credited by his admirers with sufficient pace and stamina to enable him to win the quarter and half-mile championships. Otago tends a useful team of five— F. Mace, T. E. Claughton, J. Beatson, J. F. Frew, and D. M'Farlane, mostly distance runners, who are expected to show up prominently in the one and three mile events. The Canterbury centre's team of nine includes the present New Zealand champions — H. St. A. Murray (440 yards hurdles) and C. L. Orbell (high jump)— P. H Stubberfield (walker), R. Bass, W. Do Thurs, fued (walker), B.: Bass, W. De Thurs, S. W. Moore, R. F. Mitchell, D. M'Phail, G. L. Anderson. The latter team is expected to make a strong bid for the championship shield, at present held by Wellington. The local team includes H. Henderson, E. E. Fisher, L. M'Kay, G. Thomassen, and J. Wallace (all present champions), F. W. Goodbehere, W. H. Pollock (who were second in championship' events last year), H. Kerr (one- mile walking record holder), F. Wilton (harriers' distance champion), T. Stubbs, A. E. Burge, M. Mulcahy, W. Gosling, and otheis. The third evening sports meeting organised by tho Civil Service A.A.C., held on the Basin Reserve last evening, attracted, a large number of spectators, including several champions, who will compete here on Saturday. Three events wero decided, with thb following results : — Handicap, 120yds.— First heat: Cook, Nelson, 10yds, 1 ; Fama, 7£yds, 2 ; R. Bridge, syds, 3. Timo, 12 3-ssec. Second heat : Hubbard, 10yds, 1 ; Cunningham, syds, 2 ; Goodbchere, 2£yds, 3. Time, 12 4-ssec. Final : Hubbard, 1 ; Fama, 2 ; Cook, 3. Time, 12 2-ssec.
