RIVER-BED GOLD.
[BT TELEGRAPH. — FEB6S ASSOCIATION.] WESTPORT, This Day. in a brief space of time, F. Clifford has taken one hundred ounces of gold out of his claim in Waimangaroa River — all coarse gold, and some nice nuggets Tho lowness of the stream has enabled the bed of the river to be exploited. A large number of claims have boen pegged out.
The eleventh annual meeting of the New Zealand Portland Cement Company was held at Dunedin yesterday. The report of the directors stated that great delay had been occasioned in connection with the erection of new machinery. It had been found necessary to send to England for certain steel adjuncts to replace those supplied in cast-iron with machinery constructed in New Zealand. These have not yet arrived. A colonial made rotary kiln could not bo got to work. A new manager and cement maker, Mr. Green, from America, is to arrive on Saturday next. The net profit for the year was £1883. No dividend was declared. Messrs. Barr and Begg (tho retiring directors) and G. M. Mac Lean wero elected to the Dunedin board. Mr. Edward Herbert, tho chairman, was nominated, but not elected. For tho Auckland board two new men, Messrs. P. N. Kingswell and T. Simpson, were elected. A third director is to be appointed later.
