[By "Amateub."] \V. Trombath competed at the Caledonian meeting at Dunedin on 2nd January, and his two wins in tho amatour handicaps stamp him as one of New Zealand's best middle-distance runners. Starting from hcratch, he won his heat of the 220 yds Handicap in 23 l-sseo, and romped homo in tho final in 23 4-sfiec. In the Half-mile he had his field caught ot tho quarter, aud, going on, won easily iv 2mm 4 3-56ec. On New Yerr's Day Hector Burk was defeated in a half-mile raco at Milton in 2min 9sec. On the whole, Burk's performances this season ha\o not added lustre to his name, but he ib certain to be in form for the championship meeting. It was the same last year, when after running poorly in handicaps during the early part of the season, he made hacks of Bradbury, Gosling, and Prendeville in tho mile championship. It is reported from Dunedin tliat Kcddell has decided to go into training for tho broad jump at the championship meeting. If his kneo is sound enough to survive a» preparation, ho will compete in Wellington, on Ist February. The sight in action ot the best broad jumper that New Zealand haa produced ghould bo miffioient to draw a large crowd. The Wellington Club is holding an evening meeting on 15th instani, when the following events will bo decided: — 75yds Club Handicap and 220 yds and 1£ miles flat, and putting the shot open handicaps. The club is well advised in curtailing the number of club events, which attract but liltlo interest. The Hutt Valley Club has issued the programme for the Centre Championship meeting on Bth Februaiy. Thero arc six championships — 100 yds, 220 yds, 440 yds, 880 yds, and ono mile runs, and one mile walk. Tho handicap events aro — 50yds, 120 yds, 200 yds, 600 yds, 1000 yds, three miles, 120 yds hurdlee, polo vault, and broad jump. Entries closo on 29th met. J. Wallace, who, as a member of the Auckland A.A.C., won tho hammer event at last year's championship meeting, is ab present in the Wellington district. He has joined the Wellington Club, and will represent tho Wellington Centre at the coming meeting. Wallace is a pupil of W. 11. Madill, and his best effort is within 9ft of Madill's record, which was made on the Basin Reserve eight years ago. It would therefore be particularly appropriate if Wallace should next month break tho old record on tho same ground. The following have been selected by tho centre to go into training for tho championships : — 100 yds — Henderson, Goodbchero, Fisher, J. Wilton, Dawson, Bridge, Webster. 220yds— All the above, with the addition of Cunninghame. 440 yds —Webster, Goodbehcre, Fisher, Wilton, Cunninghame. 880yjde— Burge, Goaling^. Bradbury, Morrison (Wanganui). Ono mile — Burge, Gosling, and Bradbury. Three miles — F. Wilton, Mulcahy, Sharpe. One and Throe miles walk — Kerr, Gow, Fitzgerald. 120 yds hurdles— Cook, Holmdep, Evensen, Craig, Callaghan (Wanganui). 440 yds hurdles — Cook, M'Grath, Craig, Bogle. High jump-^Thomassen, M'Kay, Evensen, Brewer/ Callaghan. Broad, jump —M'Kay, Dawson, Pollock. Pole vault — M'Kay, Moult, Evensen. Putting Shot— Thomassen, M'Kay. Throwing hammer — Wallace, Thomassen, M'Kay. Sharpe, who is selected to go into training for the threo miles run, finished lliird to Prendevillo and Murray at Dunedin two years ago. Constable Arthur Skinner has kindly consented to 'coaoh our hammer and shot men, and will commence operations when he returns from his hoftdays on 18th inrt. This year tho conferenco of centres will be held in Wellington, aud tho local centre has invited each of the other tiijntres toiysond two ' representatives to the meeting. Au invitation tq^ send- representatives baa also ' beer. " extended to the council, and this should ensure the official recognition by tha. coulicil of the resolutions passed by tho conference. The Wellington Centre has asked the council ,to postpono confirmation of its proposed new rules until after the conferenco of centres. ' This is as it fihould,,bo. The voice of tho centres is most clearly heard at this annual conferenco, aud the counoil should certainly pay some heed to what it says. A benefit evening meeting in aid ot the lato Mr. T. Carruthcys's mother will be held on 'tho Basin Reserve — probably on ?.9th inst. All the city clubs havo taken the matter up, and all athletes should enter for the events or otherwiso contribute their quota to a deserving object. Mr. Stuart Robinson has kindly presented several trophies, and the committee anticipator receiving a few more, so that a good evening's sport should bo provided. In deference to the wishes of several of Hits deceased athlete's friends, 1 publish Una week a, lift of his placed performances: — January Ist, 1907 — Provincial Championship' Meeting : . Firgt in 75yds Handicap from 8ydB ; time, 7 4-ssec.^ First in 120yda Handicap from 11yds ; lime, 11 3-ssec. February 2nd, 1907— Rutt Valley A.A.C. Meeting : First in Bracelet (220 yds) from 15yds, in 23sec. February 9th, 1907— Port Nicholson and Civil Service Meeting : Second in 220 yds Handicap frcm 12jyds, in 23 3-5-.cc. Matcli 2nd, 1907—Wellington A.A.C. Meeting: Won 100 yds Handicap, from 7yd3, in llsec. Won 220 yds Handicap, from 12yds, in 23sec. March 16th, 1307— Catholic Young Men's A.A.O. Meeting : Third in 440 yds Handicap, from ' 20yds. In discussing the prospects of competitors in the 100 yds and 880 yds championships of New South Wale?, "Prodigal," of the Referee, fervently pens tho followirg panegyric on Nigel Barker:— "l shall b& surprised if Nigel Barker misses thp two championship;. There arc seemingly no bounds to tho 'po.ssibilities' in connection with the versatile University crack. His powers as> a bprinter and- broad-jumper aro know n, fr«r is he not Australasian champion at 100 yds, 220 yds, 440 yds, amd thu running broad jump? But ho is a (stayer ako, and if he laid himself out for middle distances would assuredly be in tho champion 'clarp. I see no reason whatever why lii Fhotild not run a 'half in 1.55. He ran hvtidlo well, and should make a champion over the sticks in a 440 yds event, aud what we saw of him in tho last 440 yds Australasian Hurdle Championship, despite that, severe 'kncck-oul' fall, and tho fact that ho had put in two hard days work, proves what I contend." All of which may b9 true, but I havo my doubts about a half in 1.55. At^ Tiniaru, on New Year's Day, H. St. A. Murray, tho champion quarter hurdler, won the 440 yds flat handicap in 53 l-sseo from scratch — a very fair performance.

Mollio :I wish you were more like Mr. Simpson. Coddle : My dear, if I wero more like Mr. Simpson J /should have married a woman more like Mrs. Simpson. "England hasn't had a' war for some time." "No, they don't dare. They'ro afraid Alfred Austin might write an ode about it." — Life (New York). Mr. Gailey : Somebody's stolen our dog again. That's a d . Mis. Gailey j (hastiby. interrupting) : George! George! Don't swoar nbout it. Mr. ( Gailey? Who's swearing? I was jusfc going to say it's a dog-gone big relief. j
