The first coin was struck by tho Governor-Geiwral, Earl Grey. When Mr. Deakin, the Federal Prime Minister, went to the Imperial Conference, he took with him the following motion — "That tho profit on silver,coined for the colonies be credited to the colonies in respect to which it is gained." Sir Joseph Ward supported the proposal of Australia for a mint in that country, and asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer to allow New Zealand to follow the came course if she thought it desirable. He did not think New Zealand was likely to undertake ' the establishment of a mint in the immediate future, but he wanted New Zealand 'to bo under the same conditions as Australia. Mr. Aisquith y greed to the. motion, and said he > was willing to concede Australia and New Zealand independent action.
