<»■ Two Chinese, Fook Lee and You Lee, appeared before Mr. Riddell, S.M., this morning charged with separate breaches of the Shops and Offices Act, in selling cigarettes and- tobacco after closing time. Both accused professed inability to understand English, though the informant, Mr. Aldridge of the Labour Department, slated that one of them at" any rate, coidd speak good English. The cases were adjourned until the afternoon in order to secuTe the services of an interpreter. When proceedings were resumed this afternoon, both accused pleaded ignorance of the Act, though the inspectors declared that it had been explained to them. Fines in each case of £1 were imposed ; and costs in the case of Fook Lee £1 0s 3d and iv the case of You Leo 12s 3d, or in default seven days' imprisonment in each case. '
