-D- ; Mercy seasoned justice in the case of a young man named Charles Peterson, who, having pleaded guilty to stealing 14s 2d from his employers, the Wellington Dairy Company, came up before Mr. Piiddell, S.M., for sentence this morning. The chief detective said that nothing was known against the prisoner, who- was only eighteen years of age. He had been with his employers for three years previously, and had borne a good character. The young man had promised to refund the money, £2 i 5s in all, which he admitted to having j stolen. His Worship, on the condition that the money was repaid before tha 31st January next, convicted the accused, and ordered him to come up for sentence when called upon. Charles Bailey, who pleaded guilty to stealing/ £12 10s from Douglas Patrick on the 4th December, was remanded until Friday, 20th instant, for sentence. In the case against Adeline Tiernan, charged with forging the name of Maud TierBey on the 19th Nqvember to a receipt for £2, a remand was granted until Saturday, as the gaol surgeon declared the prisoner unfit to appear to-day. Insobriety wa^s responsible for the usual number of appearances. Thomas Scott was convicted of habitual drunkenness, arra sentenced to one month's imprisonment, with hard labour. Esther Collier and James Gibson were each fined 10s, or in default 48 hours' imprisonment, and two first offenders ss, with the alternative of 24/ hours' imprisonment. A prohibition order was granted v against Mary Hannah Medlin, during a period of 12 montb.3, to operate in the districts of the city of Wellington, Newtown, and the Hutt.
